about

Audion #26 review...
Kevin O'Neill's new tape A HOSTAGE TO FORTUNE (AM 002) is a veritable double album at 76 minutes and has much in the way of surprises, as it seems to me that Kevin has done his damnedest here to stop himself being pigeonholed as the "cosmic doodler", with many diversions into previously uncharted territory: P.M.H. is undoubtedly at Peter Michael Hamel dedication with its simmering semi-ambient/systemic patterns, and Piano No. 4 could almost be Roger Eno. There's also a much more bizarre and stochastic work curiously titled Tetapi Hu Kesenian. My favourite tracks however, are the long ones (over 9 minutes) of which there are four. In these the real spirit of Kevin's creativity takes hold, and with surprising results on the six-part 24 minute A Hostage to Fortune itself, which features collaborations from Andrew Pinches, Leif Keane and N.R. Hills. So, overall there's less of that Richard Pinhas RHIZOSPHERE and Klaus Schulze MIRAGE/TIMEWIND style here, and instead a new unfocused air of experimentation that is quite refreshing.

YouTube referencing "The Massing Of The Shades" - One of the darker, deeper moments on Kevin's final album. Not to be confused with the same named cartoonist (although this Kevin is an artist too) Kevin 's cassette-ography is a huge testament to a single vision, a self-made style in which (unlike most popular synth artists) he didn't just mimic his mentors, but expressed his own emotions...
